Die Nordschleife (north loop)

is the legendary part of the Racetrack  Nürburgring in the Eifel. Popular „The ring“ or respectful „The green hell“ (this name was given by Jackie Stewart) called, it pertains today beside the modern Grand Prix track and other motor sport arrangements and leisure facilities of the Nürburgring GmbH with the main companions to Rhineland-Palatinate and administrative district Ahrweiler.

History

Since 1922 the Eifelrennen was organised on public streets in the Eifel. Because the crossing of places with racing speed was very dangerous, there was the idea, to build a permanent track.

In 1925 began the construction works of a first Mountain, Racing and exam distance in the underdeveloped region. After up to 3000 workers had the work completed, it was opened on the 18th of June, 1927. Rudolf Caracciola won the first car race on Compressor Mercedes. With Eifelrennen in 1934 the concept silver arrow with which the successful racecars from Mercedes were called. Spectator's record went hunting to the next, until Rudolf Caracciola won the last Grand Prix before the Second World War. During the war the Racing events rested. In 1947 races were driven again.

Silver arrows from Mercedes turned only in the Middle of the 50s briefly back. Juan Manuel Fangio was the top driver at this time, and his probably best race with several round records he has driven In 1957 on Maserati.

At short notice in summer, 1970 the Nordschleife was boycotted as a Grand Prix track from Formula 1, after Heavy accidents on other Racetracks had occurred. For rebuilding measures (less jump hilltops, side stripes with guardrails, for the first time Installation from Curbs) 17 million DM were invested till 1971, and Formula 1 returned again. With the Eifelrennen in 1974, with the alternately running of cars and motorcycles took place, it came to the boycott of the Motorcycle-top drivers on account of for the mixing company to necessary compromises by the track protection. (straw bale for Motorcyclist are a danger of fire for cars)

For good as a formula 1 track was after Run out of two three-year contracts already sealed, before Formula 1 World champion Niki Lauda had an hard accident on 1 of August, 1976. In 1980 the last Motorcycle-GP on the Nordschleife found instead of. Other racing series like Formula 2, German racing sport mastery and Sports-car went furthermore transitional-wise there, in the year In 1983 also on a version shortened on 20.8 km with to temporary pits, because in the area present Start aim loop were construction works going.

Since the opening of the modern GP track in 1984 international professional's racing series only go there, and the national series Mostly to. Touring car series and in particular the popular sport events for amateurs prefer furthermore the diverse Nordschleife.

On the 28th of April, 2007 the Formula-one racing driver Nick Heidfeld went for three demonstration rounds in BMW Sauber F1 of 2006. On the basis of delays by Advertising admissions in three rounds, relatively poor in liability Demonstration tyres from Bridgestone and a chassis-higher lapping around from two to three Centimetre of archieved Heidfeld the best lap time of 8:34 Minutes. He was slower with it about 20 seconds than the quickest VLN Porsche. This was after more than 30 years the first time that a topical Formula-one car drove on the Nordschleife.

Up to now have had on accidents on the Nürburgring in motor sport events and tourist journeys all together more than 140 people fatally met with an accident. Besides, also the very surely developed GP track remained not protected before tragedies.

Course of the Road

Today the real Nordschleifen round is 20,832 kilometres long, officially has 73 curves (according to countable manner and with of increasing engine power these are rather 100) and shows to gradients from up to 18 % (increase between Caracciola Karussel (carousel) and High Eight (Hohe Acht)  and up to 11 % of slope fox's tube (Fuchsröhre)  on. Here is not considered former Distance segment Steeply sloping section (Steilstrecke) with 27 % of gradient which exists though still, nevertheless was not used for many years any more. The highest points are with the Grandstand T13 (km 0) in Nürburg and in the distance segment High Eight, the lowest point in Breidscheid. In between there lie about 290 m of height difference, what not only drivers of weakly motorised automobiles notice, but in particular the cyclists and runners at the Event Wheel & run on the ring.

Racing operation

The seasonal climax on the Nordschleife is the international ADAC-24-Hour Race for touring cars which is carried out on up to about 26 km long Combination by GP track and Nordschleife. Up to 800 amateurs and professionals participate on more than 200 cars. With series production touring cars will be completed in a shorter combination of GP track and Nordschleife about ten times a year for several hours VLN Long distance race.

Also on Saturdays the popular sport events Find GLP and RCN instead of which limit themselves to the pure Nordschleife, so that in parallel other races on the GP track can be held. Besides, there is on the Nordschleife the Possibility by his own car to successfully participating in several permanent testing (GLP) to qualify for a DMSB  or FIA racing driver's licence.

Record laps

The quickest lap times or on account of different Distance variations the highest average speeds attracted attention over and over again. Drivers like Niki Lauda, Clay Regazzoni, Stefan Bellof and Helmut Dähne have put here records which can be never again underbid on the basis of Rebuilding works or not more admitted Racing vehicle categories.

Already in the 1930s records with appeal to the public were set and broken. In particular, the symbolic undercutting of full minutes that previously were considered unreachable "walls", brought the riders a glory and honor. So Bernd Rosemeyer Mastered on Auto Union in 1936 as the first 22,810 kilometres under 10 Minutes. Hermann Lang placed in 1939 on a Mercedes "silver arrow" with 9:43,1 a make, which in spite of rebuildings of the distance only in 1954 Juan Manuel Fangio could improve. 9 minutes were underbid for the first time in 1961 from Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips. With Touring Cars drove for the first time Hubert Hahne, in the zeal of the battle against competition from Alfa Romeo, in 1966 with BMW 2000 Ti less than 10 minutes or on an average faster than 137 km/h, what BMW used Advertising-efficiently.

The new brake chicanery Hohenrain extended the Nordschleife in 1967 on 22,835 kilometres. Jim Clark missed with a rainy Grand Prix of Germany in 1968 still the "8-minutes wall". Nevertheless, by the new rear wings was foreseeable that in 1969 most pilots "crack" the mark would become. Jacky Ickx drove the quickest round during 7:45,9 minutes and the running by an average of 174.4 km/h won.

By rebuilding works in 1970/71 the Nordschleife became safer, however, also clearly quick, just as now about Slicks and improves Aerodynamics to disposing racing cars. The 7-minutes make soon moved in handy nearness, but only Niki Lauda on Ferrari succeeded in  training in 1975 as the first and only in underbidding this with 6:58,4 minutes. The absolute round record which can be set only in a race, Achieved his team colleague Clay Regazzoni with 7:06,4 minutes or a cut from 192.8 km/h on the narrow and uneven racing distance.

In the next year small control changes Retarded the formula 1 one which did not return after 1976 any more to the Nordschleife. Other racing categories like Sports-cars, Touring cars and Formula 2 still drove till 1982 on the original 22,835 Kilometre of long Nordschleife, and drivers like Klaus Ludwig, Manfred Winkelhock and Klaus Niedzwiedz came to the round record in spite of quite different Vehicles very near, however, could not break this.

Stefan Bellof approached the record with his first Nordschleifen application on Formula 2 with BMW engine after 7:06,51 minutes in second Race lap at the Eifelrennen, however, retired afterwards. He is till this day the only one which drove the Nürburgring-Nordschleife with a cut from more than 200 km/h, on the 28th of May, 1983 in the practise to 1000-km race with Porsche 956 C; round time: 6:11,13 Minutes for the distance shortened because of construction works of 20,835 km. Ex-F1 pilot Jochen Mass was five Seconds slower as a second-placed, the acting F1 world champion Keke Rosberg lost even 30 seconds. In the race, Bellof crashed in the lead after he had set a new round record from 6:25,91 minutes. For comparison: nowadays still on the Nordschleife to permissible heavier vehicles about seven minutes needed for the same distance variation on the Nordschleife

Uwe Alzen  Keeps up the VLN lap record with 8:09,949 Minutes, put up in 2005 with the Porsche Turbo of his brother.
